Wildwood, the question is about chickens and chickens eggs, it's just abbreviated for simplicity. (Just as using the singular doesn't mean one particular chicken or one particular egg.) The answer is still the egg: chickens have evolved from something else we wouldn't call chickens, but the first one still came out of something we'd call an egg.
