Pigs are among the most intelligent of domesticated animals and as such are quite territorial. This trait is even displayed during the early suckling order of piglets. The dominate individual in a herd of swine chooses the "best" place at the feeding trough as well as the mud hole and shade areas, including the pig huts. Lesser individuals challenge this hierarchy at their own peril.
