New System In Nhs

I received a letter this morning about the new system that is being launched called ''Summary Care Record'' ( your emergency care summary) where Healthcare staff ( with my permission ) will have access to my personal health records.
Now I don't have a problem with this but what I do want to know is am I able to access my own personal records on the Internet ? I have been in touch with the dedicated NHS Summary Care Record Information Line to ask this question & was told no but have a word with your GP. I rang the Practice this morning & was informed that no one else had asked this question & there did not seem to be provision for it, when I informed the receptionist that surely there could be a password provided she said you will have to take this up with the doctor, which I intend to do at my earliest opportunity.
Has this been properly thought out or is it yet another encroachment on our dwindling liberties ? What do other A/Bers think ?

Ron, yes you can see what is in your record, your GP practice will have access to the full record and you have to ask there if you want to see it. http://www.nhscarerecords.nhs.uk/faqs

As it says on that link, patients can't log in (so they won't give you a password) but the surgery will print the record, and if you want to change anything they can do that for you.

I can see why patients can't have direct access - otherwise things could be changed at will! - but it does mean that you have the right to inspect what is on your medical record, and do soemthing about it if it's not correct.

Also, not being able to log in yourself makes the site more secure against hackers.

Good point - the NHS computer systems are encrypted (ask my laptop, it's a nightmare if it goes wrong...) - you wouldn't want the risk that anyone else could see your records.

the reason you can't log on from a patient view is that each access to your SCR is logged as to who and where - this is to prevent healthcare staff accessing your records unless they have a clinical need to. I personally think it's a great idea

That's a useful bit of info, bednobs, I didn't realise that access is tracked.
