I know all cars suffer from this but a relatives car seems worse than normal. Its a Honda Civic with a few years under its belt.
Any tips on how to cope with it?

As others have said, turning the air conditioning on (if available) drys the air and reduces (or eliminates) misting.
However nobody seems to have mentioned a basic bit of physics. Water vapour (aka 'mist') can't adhere to glass. It can only adhere to the dirt on the glass. Clean the inside of our windscreen with vinegar (applied via a wad of kitchen towel) and your misting-up problems will suddenly disappear!
