White Christmas
Just watching the best Christmas films and everyone goes mad for the song White Christmas. But when Irving Berlin wrote this song, he was taking the pi$$ out of everyone in New York.
As a young song writer he'd been given a rough time by lots of people in New York who said he was no good and would never make it in the business.
When he did have his success, he bought a house in Malibu in sunny California. That is where he wrote the song. You have to think of it in a sarcastic vein.
Here I am in Malibu, and I'm dreaming of a white christmas. Just the like the ones I USED to know. May your days be merry and bright. And may all your christmasses be white. Say it with venom instead of singing it all smaltzy. As though you're saying it to someone you don't like. Because he didn't like New York after the way it treated him. Hence the sarcastic song that became, probably, the worlds' most known.
Fortuitous mavbe, but it made him a bob or two eh?
