sound on computer

the sound on my computer has gone all muffled and blurry. Have tried some new speakers but doesn't seem to help the problem. has anyone got any ideas what I can do to fix it?! thanx :-)

Standard things: re-install driver, get an updated driver from your manufacturer, update directx, get a new sound card.
