want to buy something on ebay that is quite big, and will probably be pick up only. I know how to order the search so the closest ones come up forst, but in order to increase my chances of a bargain, i also want to look at ones that are near my parents, so they could pick up (in a different county) is there any way of ordering the list for ones that are closest to a different postcode than your own?

Yes, go to Advanced Search when you type in whatever it is you want. Scroll down to ITEMS NEAR ME, scroll down to ITEMS WITHIN (select 10 miles) of POSTCODE (enter your parents post code).

Yes, go to Advanced Search when you type in whatever it is you want.
Scroll down to ITEMS NEAR ME,
scroll down to ITEMS WITHIN (select 10 miles) of POSTCODE (enter your parents post code).
go into account and then addresses and do a temporary change for postal address and see if it works for your search.

Yes, you can enter any post code in the search bar and specify the max distance away from that post code,( 10 miles to 500 miles I think.)
Do you know how to put an item on your 'Wish List' on ebay ? You can describe the things you are intrested in and you are notified if an item that matches is listed . Saves a lot of ramdom searching and you know before anyone else.
oo excellent i hadn't ever looked at those options, they make alot of difference,
Bednobs DON'T change your address it is NOT nessesary , as I and TheWinner say you can enter ANY post code in the search field.
