Chris
My partner's dad had this. Poly meaning more than one, and cystic referring to the cysts that grow on the kidneys. They burst and cause bleeding in the kidneys which in turn causes bleeding in the urine. The kidneys suffer from renal failure, most often not completely but the effectiveness decreases with time. Dialysis flushes out the kidneys and basically does the job the kidney would do if normal. Otherwise the person is very open to infection from the things the kidneys can't clean up. As with the transplant you just have to be lucky, even with a match, there is a chance of rejection and this is combatted with a myriad of drugs including steroids which causes quite a considerable weight gain, due to one the extra kidney (cos they don't remove a kidney to put one in due to the complication of infection and rejection from the differing organs, and you can have up to 4 extra kidneys inside you, i.e. you can have 6 kidneys), from the steroids, and from the lack of mobility the person has to endure afterwards. Each kidney can last over 10 years, and is probably better now with the improvement of drugs, but there is only 2 option...dialysis or transplant.
Hope this helps some.
