I put Thomas Bowdler who appears to have been a Doctor

Good luck

It cannot have been Thomas Bowdler as he died in 1825. The wreck of the Hesperus occurred in 1839 and Longfellow wrote the poem soon after.
Quote: Bowdler also "cleaned up" Tennyson's poem The Wreck of the Hesperus, expurgating,
for example, the offensive term "bull." His substitution? "Gentleman cow." ...
Tennyson?

Thomas Bowdler died in 1825, therefore he was NOT a Victorian, NEITHER was he a clergyman. ( Also, there is some dispute as to whether or not it was he, or his sister, who wielded the blue pencil !)
