If I am the first and only person to bid on an ebay item can I withdraw the bid, and how do I do that? Thanks folks

yes you can -go back to eBay and click help and it will tell you how to do it -you can retract a bid up to 12 hours (I think) before the auction ends.

Thank you very much mags. It is less than 12 hours and ebay say to contact seller, which I have now done. So fingers crossed. It's my fault, so I'll take it on the chin, as they say!
