When it is shared another user (on their own login) can open it and if its on a network other terminals can open it. The point of having multiple users on one computer is to ensure security for the users. If you're letting other people use your login they can access your folders and files.
To ensure that a folder isn't shared, right click on the folder and select 'properties'. Select the 'sharing' tab and if the folder is shared you will be able to tick the box marked 'make this folder private'. Also un-tick the box marked 'share this folder on the network'. Incidentaly, a shared folder will have an open hand in front of its icon.
The best thing to do would be to amend the NTFS folder permissions. This will lock down the folder completely.
Do amend the NTFS permissions do the following:
Locate Folder, Right Click on it, Select Properties. From the box that appears, Select Security. (If this option is not available, then your hard disk has not been formatted to NTFS configuration, and there is not much you can do).
If you do have Security, select it. Remove ALL the names and goups in there. Then select Add. Type or Locate your own username and Add it. Then give yourself Full Control permissions. Now you have full access to the folder, and any account other then yours is not able to access it - not even the administrators! (although an Admin can change the permissions if they know how).
Another way, it to Encrypt the folder. This will prevent all users other then your own username from viewing the files and folders. Right Click the folder, Select Properties. Press the Advanced button and then select the "Encrypt Contents to Secure Data" option.
