Went Shopping Today.......

Pulled out of the cul-de-sac and on to the road. Another 100 yards to the main road. (Main for us but still quite minor) 20 yards and heard the siren of a police car. Pulled over, I thought he just wanted to get past. He got out of his car, came over and asked me to do the same. Asked me if I had been drinking. No says I. What about last night he asked, again I replied no. Okay he said, got back in his car and off he went. I really was shaken by this so I went home. No shopping but puzzled.

I can't see that gness and eccles have been anything but supportive - with no criticism either explicit or implicit of Jeza.
Just clear statements that we should all welcome the police doing their job - which at this time of year includes checking vehicles and drivers to protect the rest of us who use the roads.

I'd be puzzled too, Jeza - there are enough people out there driving badly on major roads (several dozen of them have sped past me in the rain, cut in on me etc in the last couple of days) to pull up without wasting their time on people driving safely on minor roads. I suppose the answers others have given must be correct, but I don't really see the point of it all.
I have no idea why my comments have been taken quite so personally or viewed as an attack.
There was no rebuke, I'm not sure what it is I should leave and no one was being picked on. Many of us have our cross to bear and have days when we feel vulnerable.
A sense of perspective is a great thing and is all the more important when we find ourselves being more inward looking than is necessarily good for us.

Are there any actual statistics for "next morning" drink driving.
Of course it is technically possible to be over the limit. But the example given by drinkaware involves drinking until 3am and then getting up and driving by 8am ...

Do many of us often drink until 3am???
Is the risk actual, or notional?
Are there any stats?

I have been pulled by a roadblock and breathalysed...hadn't had a drink for 48 hours but the cop said that the car smelled of alcohol, I should think it did, my middle aged, dinner jacketed DH and his mates had just been for a night out and I was taking them home. They were all in high and hilarious spirits and ribbed the policeman unmercifully. I managed to reverse over and destroy a bollard (not my fault, he told me to reverse and didn't move the bollard)
I dont mind being pulled but wonder if that's the best use of police time if they have no reason to think that the driver has been drinking.

My last word because I realise now that some posts require agreement and not discussion but....I can't think of many better uses of police time, at this time of year especially, than checking the ability of people to drive safely and soberly in taxed, insured and roadworthy cars.
