Can anybody recommend any Japanese authors other than Banana Yoshimoto and Murakami?

I've just picked up Strangers by Taichi Yamada and want to try Tanizaki too.

Yukio Mishima author of Confessions of a Mask, Temple of the Golden Pavillion and The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea. Read about his life and philosophy to get an impression. His books are quite difficult to get in to and can be very violent but I recommend them.

Yasunari Kawabata wrote a great novel called Beauty and Sadness. However, I've yet to read his most famous novel The Sound of the Mountain which I think won him the nobel prize for literature.

Thanks Aschenbach - I've often looked at Mishima but thought they looked hard to get into, but I'm alwasy willing to take up a challenge!
