The answer is yes - most sweets contain glucose-fructose syrup and the fructose is metabolised in the liver to cholesterol. You don't get raised cholesterol by eating fat - think of the Inuit who eat blubber but don't get heart attacks until they eat the stuff the Americans eat. Fructose in quantity is really bad for you - we can deal with the small amount in fruit.
