Some numpty put a candle on my oak sideboard and it's now spattered with wax (bits too small to lift off whole). Any advice on getting it off safely? I know about ironing over absorbent paper but am a bit nervous of a hot iron on the wood.

Prudie, if you don't mind the table being waxed, then try softening the wax with a hair dryer. Much lower temperature than an iron.
When the wax is soft enough, you could rub it in with grade 0000 wire wool, or any mild abrasive.
The wire wool is useful since that's what is often used to apply wax to furniture.

Thank you both, I've been dragged out for the afternoon but I shall try the hairdryer tomorrow.
I keep 1 or 2 old plastic visa cards and find them invaluable for removing most things
(even old paint spots) and they dont scrape the surfaces
