Slight swerve from the OP, but why do we tip hairdressers/waiter people ?
Believe it or not but I still do a paper round every morning (double on a Saturday and a Sunday) before I go to work.
Over 100 houses I deliver to and roughly 20 gave me a tip this year, quite a bit down from last year.
Ranged from a pound to a tenner...I live in a decent area as well..Mainly Daily Mail readers (Hello SP!)
Only get Christmas Day off but it keeps me fit :)
Always tip my paperboy - deserve it as he is out in all weathers.
I had a paper round from when I was 12 until I was 16 as well..A long time ago..and got bigger tips in those days..Mind you Maggie Thatcher was in charge..Loadsamoney!
I gave my dustmen a tenner. They are very good, and on the odd occasion Ive forgotten to put the bin out they have come up my front path and wheeled it down for me.
postman is a different one everyday, don't have a milkman, nor a coalman.
Couldn't afford to tip anyone this ear and to be brutal, they are not tradesmen imo. (apologies if that offends)
tenner and tin of chocs for pampering.....that's all......different bin and post men each time.....
I tip my postman as he posts anything that needs a signature, and leaves any parcels round the side out of sight, saves me a trip to the delivery office.

Binmen would get a tip if they didn't keep leaving the bloody bin across the driveway every week!
paper boy...
No. No one tips me. They're only doing their job. I would find it condescending in any case.
Snowball - it's OK to let them up your front path, but never trust them up your back passage.
Always tip the paper boy. Vital to my existence and does not get paid much for lugging around ever heavier loads in foul weather.
I'm with purple, forget Christmas, why do we tip people the rest of the year, people such as hairdressers, taxi drivers etc, yes they provide a service, but they do get paid for it, the same way anybody else does. You wouldn't think of tipping the checkout operator in the supermarket when they pack all of your bags for you, yet they have provided a service beyond that which was expected of them.
Tip the postie as he is very good at leaving packages in garage for me. Usually tip him mid December as sometimes a relief helps out nearer Christmas. Also tip refuse men as they are also extra helpful.
