Update On Waiting Puppies...............
16 Answers
Well my daughter was concerned about her dog and the vet asked to see her straight away. Did a scan and found there was just two very big puppies so had to do emergency C section. Mother and 2 pups are now home. Just hoping when mum feels more with it she will take to her babies but as yet doesn't want to know. Just wondering what happened to the others the vet could see the other week.?

She may be unaware that they are 'her' babies and try to harm them. I had this happen with a greyhound bitch and she killed six puppies when she came round from the anesthetic (although she did have two, as they had to put her under to spay her after the C section because she was bleeding internally). Incompetent vets were to blame. Hope the bitch and two pups are ok and she takes to them. Bet that was a nice big bill - not so easy this dog breeding lark is it?
Just heard from my daughter, mum and pups are back at the vets. mum took poorly this afternoon and vet said her temperature was very low and he has kept her in to warm her up also has taken some blood tests taken. My daughter thought they let her go home too soon after the op. because they said to pick her up at 5.15 tonight and then rung at 12.00 to say they could come home.
Happy New Year Lankeela. yes they let mum and pups home again later last evening, she was a lot better by then thank goodness.! Phoned my daughter this morning and she said she stayed up all night with her trying to get her to feed the puppys. going over to see them in a minute.Thankyou for asking. Brenda xx
tam, Labrador.
lankeela, thankyou again.
Have seen them this morning. mum really doesnt want to know and keeps walking around and ignoring them. When she did lay in her bed she wouldnt lay near the pups. The vets sent them home in a small plastic box lined with a blanket that keeps them warm and a small blanket over the top of them because she will not let them go near her for warmth. Such a shame as she is such a lovely dog. My daughter has trouble to get her to lay down when its feed time for the pups......and then after a while she just gets up and walks away. Wow the price of the vets bills is already £1000 glad I didnt breed mine.! he didnt charge anymore last night when he took her back in for blood tests and to warm her up. Think he may have been feeling guilty??? also when my daughter said it was strange there was only two pups as she saw the heart beat of four at least........he decided to do another xray and didnt charge for that either.!

tam, I am not sure. my daughter has been putting her puppies onto her when they cry , about every two hours and then they go to sleep. so I should think they are getting something from her. My daughter wonders if ,by tomorrow.she isnt any closer to them then maybe she should top them up with a bottle.
Tube feeding is better than bottle, but she needs to be shown how to do it or you end up putting the milk into the lungs instead of the stomach. If the pups are settling though after being put on her teats then they must be getting enough. Even though its a pain its better for them to get mum's milk. You would know if they are not getting enough to eat as they would be crying a lot and not sleeping. If they are settled and making a 'buzzing' noise like bumblebees then they are quite content. Make sure if the mum does not lick them after feeding to 'top and tail' them - use a warm wet flannel to wipe their mouths and bottoms which enourages them to go to the toilet or else you will get problems with them becoming constipated.
Try holding them up to her mouth one at a time. What a good job there are not a dozen or more of them!

Hi again lankeela, Thankyou for your advice. Yes it is a good job there are only two. mum still doesnt want to know the pups. such a shame as she is such a soft dog and wouldnt hurt a fly. Yesterday she lifted her leg so a pup could go underneath to her teat but didnt stay there long. My daughter has to just hold her down some times. gently of course. Yes she has been wiping their mouths and bottoms. Now my daughter has trouble with the studs owners. Although they are friends they still want the sale of one of the puppies. That will mean my daughter will be out of pocket by at least £1000. She didnt breed to make money but just to cover the costs would have been nice. Brenda xx
It is a fact that most reputable breeders don't make money from breeding despite what some people think. Health tests such as hip and elbow scoring (about £300), eye testing (annually £30+), DNA testing (Labs have quite a few tests) most of which are in excess of £100, stud fees (often the price of a puppy), plus registration fees and thats all without the feed and keep of the mum and puppies till they are sold and without unforeseen vets bills as your daughter has found out. Luckily she still has the bitch, some people are not so lucky and lose their beloved pets without realising the dangers.
