Over dressed for a house party?

HI

Can anyone tell me what is appropriate to wear for a house party - couples, aged 30 - 40 yr old. I have no idea what kind of party it is, and have bought a lovely simple black dress, but now thinking i should wear jeans and a strappy top? What to wear whenyou don't know the occasion? Also, if i wear it and am overdressed, whats the best way to pull it off?

I don't think you can go wrong with a little black dress, you can always dress it up or down with jewellry. Have a good time!!

Yes a black dress sounds fine to me too - just don't bother with the tiara!!! Hope you enjoy it!

Maybe a contrasting cardigan or maybe even a short cut one with sequins to tone it down a bit if you have concerns still!

There is nothing at all wrong with contacting your host / hostess and asking for guidance on the dress code - better to be safe than sorry.

Can't go wrong with black trousers, fashionable boots, and a nice black top possibly with sequins or beads on - don't show too much flesh though

thanks guys, rang the host and asked - he said it was an informal get together. settled for black pants, black top and a demin waistcoat ( george sale!). When i got there some had jeans on and some had dresses on! i felt ok and had a good time. thanks all.
