I can understand it being of interest to people who like films, but it's not what I'd call news. Is it just me?

Is it still the Christmas silly season as far as news goes?
it's in other news sources too

I don't see whay a film shouldn't be news, but Lee/Tarantino clashes are nothing new. I expect aog to post on this any day now, once the Mail has picked up the story.
Most news programs are more like a magazine, and do not cover just politics and world/national issues. They also cover the arts-cinema,books,authors. This is time allowing-so maybe the item was a 'filler'...what exactly was said?

Ha! Churnalism.

I just saw that, and frankly, it just seems like a free advert for the film.

As such, there's no newsworthy value to the piece. Unless the 'news' is that a film is coming out.

And that's not really news.
Looking at JNO's link I see it's not about Django Reinhardt. Pity.

It seems the controversy is in how a film made by a white man depicts slavery...with Spike Lee comparing it to a spaghetti western.

So yes-that can be news.

Controversy is his middle name.

It's still not what I would call BBC 6 o'clock news-worthy.
A film which contains a depiction of slavery and the liberal use of the "N" word, and yet still doesn't cause offence amongst black folk, has just got to be news.

AOG

I assume you didn't see the report. No mention of that was made at all.

Therefore the question stands - what was the news value of the piece?

I was merely referring to the Guardian's headline:

/// Django Unchained wins over black audience despite Spike Lee criticism ///

See jno's Guardian link.
I should have said I didn't see the TV story either.

I see the film is on the cover of Sight & Sound this month. I think every Tarantino film is taken seriously, though I'm not sure that makes it into a news story, except over a quiet new year.
