How Soon Is Too Soon?

I have just seen a trailer for the new film "the impossible" which is about the boxing day tsunami. It struck me that it was too soon to be making a film about it (although on checking, it was 8 years ago) Still feels too soon though. Also, i think bringing it out this time of year seems insensitive too. But is it really too soon? There were films about 9/11 fairly soon after i suppose. How soon do you think is too soon?

Hi bednobs, I went to see this film yesterday, and although I had my doubts, for the same reasons as yourself, that it was too soon, and being the wrong time of year, I actually left the cinema feeling a bit differently. There is never a 'right' time to do films that portray such suffering, but this film seemed to use the tsunami as a setting for a true story about one families fight for survival, the tsunami itself didn't take centre stage, and I felt that it got just the right amount of focus. If it weren't for the fact that it was a true story, this is a film that could have been set against any natural disaster, the fact remains though that the tsnami was the actual event. Please don't let this put you off watching a very heart warming film. I believe we've been watching war films for many many years.

It doesn't seem that long ago does it. I guess it depends how they have done it. I'd be more inclined to watch something more tribute based without silly amounts of Hollywood treatment. I'd be the same with 9/11 and other tragedies. I don't think I've seen any though didn't they do one which was more in tribute to the emergency services, the firemen I think?

To me it's still to real for any kind of disaster movie treatment, I guess like with Titanic, war films...

I heard the other day there was uproar about the survivours and families of the cinema shooting in the US being invited to the reopening night for a tribute then a "movie", not sure how true it is but that is being hailed as very insensitive.

Hi, bednobs, I really don't know how long is respectful if at all. I read in the old Daily Mail today about the photographer who built a kiosk type structure to photograph polar bears. Now he reckons he know what it is like. Now when I read the article I was upset for the people who lost a child ( student ) to a polar bear a couple of years ago. So I don't know...insensitive..maybe.
