special needs teaching

I am currently studying on a PGCE course in Secondary education and want to go on to teach in specail needs education. Can I complete my NQT year at a Special Needs school?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.This is something you need to ask your college mentor. They are running the course, and will be able to advise you. I imagine they will be delighted that you want to specialise in such a tricky area. You will have to get a job first though! Could you ask your lecturer if they could put you in a special school for teaching practice as well? That way you will gain experience and you will know if it is what you want to do before actually committing to a real job.
The majority of SEN schools normally only accept applicants who've either got a minimum of 3 years experience in mainstream education (and are prepared to work towards specialist qualifications) or who've already got specific SEN qualifications.
