Yes! This is an American writing, just so you know! The idea is that whatever happens to you on New Year's Day foretells/predicts what will happen to you for the rest of that year. Especially important is the first thing that happens after midnight on Jan. 1. Fortunately, you can influence your own "fate" and bring yourself good luck rather than bad luck. I have heard that you can place a coin outside of your door (not the window) sometime on Dec. 31, then bring it inside after midnight on Jan. 1. Doing that will ensure that you will take in more money throughout the year! However, this superstition gets much more complicated. You should not write any cheques or pay any bills on Jan. 1, or else you might keep losing money throughout the new year. You don't even want to take the garbage out on Jan. 1, or else you might continue to lose items from your home throughout the year. Be sure that things only come into your home on New Year's Day and that nothing exits. I do mean "nothing"! When you go to bring the coin inside, you can't stick your arm out the door to fetch it, because then something would be leaving your home before anything entered it! That would certainly undo the good luck spell, and might even bring bad luck! Instead, what you can do is place the coin inside a bag on Dec. 31, tie a string around the bag, and put the bag outside, trailing the string into your home. After midnight on Jan. 1, use the string to pull the bag with the coin inside, and that way you don't have to have anything exit through the door before something enters it.
