I am a partner in a small company that has recently had a website made
(non professional but OK) it has after about 5 weeks started to appear on Google but not until about the third page, I have noticed that the first page on any category always seems to have the first 3 or 4 listings in a shaded area of the page which I presume the owners of the websites have paid for, my question is what is this service called, is it expensive and how can I get our website on this service?

People know that the shaded results are adverts and not genuine results. I certainly always ignore them. In fact Google is now so seriously compromised that I have started to use Bing.
SEO is also pretty bogus. I am sick of searching for something only to get several useless hits at the top because they have been optimised. The whole thing is getting more and more useless to the user.
I fear that unless you have pots of money, you will have to be patient and wait for your site to become more well known naturally. (That's assuming it isn't an on-line business).
