how do i write a cheque

I'm on hsbc solo and flexible saver account and I need to write a cheque to someone through the post he doesnt recommend cash. I got a cheque book but I don't know how to fill it in, thanks.

Where it says Pay (on the top line) you write the name of the person who you are sending the cheque to.

Underneath, you write the amount inwords i.e 'Twenty Two Pounds Ninety Nine Pence Only'. You could draw a line from the end of the last word to the end of the line, so that no-one can add any extra words.

In the box with the pound sign in it, put the amount in figures - �22.99. Then put the date on the top, sign it and the bottom and Bob's your uncle!

Most often, one writes whole pounds in words but pence in figures, so in the example above it would read "Twenty two pounds and 99 pence only".

Well I always write mine as 'ninety nine pence' but i don;t suppose it makes much difference either way.

The 'only' actually means no pence - ie pounds only.

So ninety nine pounds only �99.00)

or ninety nine pounds ninety pence (�99.99)

If you put the pence and only, every one will know what you mean but strictly speaking it's ambiguous

i thought you put "only" after any amount so nobody can add any extra??
