I've just been having a look at my copy of Homecraft Book ( formerly Dundee edition used in schools when "Domestic Science" was taught)At the end of the book is Division of Income:
Sufficient money should be put aside for
(1)Rent,(2)Food,(3)Lighting and Heating (4)Cleaning materials (5)Clothing,(6)Emergencies,e.g.,Illness,(7) Saving,(8) Pleasure and Charity.
The above vary with different conditions of employment, locality, size of family, and ages of children.
Pay ready money when possible. If hire purchase is considered, the required amount must be put aside in addition to the above items.

Still good advice? My mother lived by "if you haven't the money to buy something then don't buy it" or save up( difficult sometimes) till you've got the money.
Changed days now? Some things have definitely changed for the better. You don't have to pay for a doctor's visit!

most people still budget and keep a close eye on their montly expenditure.
I agree with Booldawg. It's just the reckless and the feckless people who get written about in the media. We don't hear about the sensible people.
