RTE News has just said there was horsemeat in 29% (think I got that right) of burgers tested and sold in many major supermarkets in Ireland.
No major risk to health, however.
That's a big consolation.
There was also pork DNA.
Anyone care to comment?

It's time I shifted too. It would be nice to have an expat thread so we could contribute. Do you want to start, DT?

Expat or ex-expat maybe?
i found the news shocking ... i didn't think there was any meat in shop bought burgers
lol @ aelmpvw

It's the same with beef crisps which say suitable for vegetarians!
please do not assume that unwittingly eating horse meat is safe. We do not yet even know the origin of the horse meat in question. In the UK, we breed cattle, sheep and pigs for meat. These animals are bred and managed for the purpose of human consumption and are within a regime of controlled feeding and approved medication for animals going into the food chain. Horses are not under any such regime, in the UK at least. In fact, *many* horses live their later lives under a long term drug regime such as daily doses of very strong painkillers for arthritis and other joint problems, wormers, (absolutely necessary to keep any horse healthy) steroids and other drugs for metabolic illnesses (common in older horses), to name a few.
jane exactly, if some assume it's fine then ok, but don't pass off beefburgers, the name gives it away, if it has horsemeat in it, they should be called beef/horseburgers, or even worse pig/beefburgers.
One thing i do know it that when someone says it's perfectly safe, it's not.
No DT, we get this exotic meat here in a little shop in Ibiza, I will try anything, but couldn't stomach reindeer when I was in Finland, just seemed so wrong, but it was tasty!
did you eat the red nose, neti?
