Danger On The Dark Streets

I'm sure everyone knows I hate the lights being switched off in residential areas of our town, and have a regular moan that its so scary and dark! But won't it be even more dangerous in this deep snow, we live on a hill and loads of cars are skidding about and can't make it up the hill as it not been gritted. I would hate to walk on the pavements without street lights in this weather, the snow is so deep!

I'm really not being flippant, Ann, but could you take a torch out with you?

I live in the sticks so carry a torch for about 6 months of the year.

We live at the bottom of a hill, and it can be scary at times.
When its snowing its worse and we watch all the cars skidding trying to get up. Thats in a lit area, so must be awfull when your road has no lights.

2 sp - I never walk out in the dark I wouldn't venture out after midnight, but even the thought of the dark streets terrifies me just looking out of the bedroom window! There have been 2 burglaries on our normally safe estate this week.

We lived in on the edge of a largish village in France for 5 years and all the street lighting went off at 11pm. Many times we wobbled home from neighbours or the local bar with the aid of a torch! The night sky was a sight to behold when not polluted by street lighting.

Yes I know I have an irrational fear but I'm a blooming townie LOL :))

Ann, there are snow grippers that you can easily slip over your shoes, they do not look foolish / stupid / but I believe they have a very good grip, they take about 2 mins to slip over your shoes. regards the cars, if they had any sense, they would leave their cars at the bottom & walk up depending on the length distance to their house.

I know TWR but you try telling them, they are nuts to try and get up the hill anyway, our car hasn't moved all day! I think the depth of the snow has taken people completely by surprise as its only been the fine powdery sort not a blizzard, and its really settled deep in a couple of hours!

They do air trips from East Mids airport to see the aurora borealis ..... at a cost! Ah well, when we win the lottery!

Most important, make sure your car has antifreeze, & if poss, point the front of your car in the direction of your House / Garage to stop the cold frozen air getting to the Radiator Grill.

you may well find it brighter than usual because of the white snow. But there's almost no moon at the moment, unfortunately.

I often walk on the road in this sort of weather; cars seem to melt snow better than pedestrians do. But yes, take a torch.

Sorry, I've just read that. You'd hate to live where I live. Countryside, no lights, and I can't see another house from my windows.

We moved to live in a village in 1972 and never gave a thought to street lights (I'd always lived in York)
Went to the cinema with a neighbour, got off the last bus and couldn't see a foot in front of me.
It was rather embarrassing when I fell down a very steep slope into one of the neighbour's gardens.

Council saving money - they keep trying to justify it but a lot of people don't like the idea, especially in this icy weather.
