before special cat and dog food?

They obviously did and, as far as I know, before 1920 dog biscuits were available as treats but no specific food. Now it is a huge industry, supermarket shelves dedicated to it and we even have companies that deliver nothing but pet food.

Caron my mother used to get pluck for our dog. It looked disgusting and when she cooked it I had to leave the house as it absolutely stunk.
''what's happened to white chalky dog turds!?''

People don't feed their dogs marrow bones as much as they used to...

When I had my cat, he lived on chicken and tin sardines in tomato sauce. Never fed him tin cat food, I think it contains horse meat and stinks. My cat lived to the ripe age of 19.
Dogs are natural scavengers and will eat anything they can get their chops around, but would rather have a bowl of doggy-steaky-chewy with moist gravy tinned beef when offered the choice. Likewise my cat would rather have a tin of tuna than have to catch the bluetit that flies in through the open window in the drawing room and poos on the telly. But the cat can live happily on dead birds and the dog can live on rubbish from the bins, they just wouldn't be quite as portly as our pets have become.
