How many letters, nannypuzzler?
It may not be a clue within the crossword- it's quite likely to be a clue to the theme
The only writer I can see is Anthony Hope 9th Feb 1863.
If it is Anthony Hope , his only short story is this:- 'The Philosopher in the Apple Orchard.'
Charles McClean Andrews?
There are a few writers here born in 1863. Do any of those fit the bill?

Do you have the numbers of letters for the story? That might help us.
Anthony Hope wrote The Prisoner of Zenda didn't he?

It is a clue to the theme - but some of the answers are unclued and are a story by this writer! The blanks are --E / -------- / O ------- To make matters even worse, there are FOUR words in the story title, so one of the blanks is split - but we don't know where! It is a pig! Am thinking around it being The something of something? Will investigate some of your suggestions and try to fill in some more letters from the conventional clues (there are some of those, too!) Bet you thought old folk had things easy!

Crickey! Bet it is Anthony Hope and The Prisoner Of Zenda! Wonder why Google didn't come up with him? Well done and thank you, Zobowo!
If you'd given us the numbers of letters we would have come up with the answer sooner.
Question Author
I didn't know the number of letters for the author.
