I'd say Run(g) is the correct past tense of ring
run-up is the time for preparation
No, forget that - it must be rang - she rang the door bell.
Run-up (preparation) - 'run(g) up' - no 'g(ood)'
True bibble - how confusing.

Thanks all - you see my confusion because both rang and rung are the past tense of ring....... She rang the doorbell and the doorbell was rung!!

I think I will go with run up and look for the answer next Saturday
'rag up' or 'rug up' don't make sense
(tut, my use of English has nose-dived)
The past tense (RANG) is used for past actions, and the past participle (RUNG) for actions in the past that have been completed. So I would say RUN UP is correct in this instance as the clue uses the word "phoned", i.e. a copleted call. (I think!)
Run(g)-up - preparation
Oops - that was odd...
