If so how was this possible when the gas plant was surrounded by Algerian troops, and the plant is in the middle of a desert with no place to hide?

The key word is in the headline:" Behind". We want to hunt down those terrorists who planned and organised the attack. It is not about those on the site.

From what I have heard some of those working in the plant were also members of the militants. This could make sense as the Muslims were separated and told to clear off before imprisoning the rest.

The fact that they let Algerian workers go free is not evidence that they were in on the attack. The target was westerners and particularly the French. Nothing at all would be gained by attacking and killing Algerians.
