Dear fizzydrinks2...helps a little bit in my job if people can spell...if you work in a hospital and you can't spell then people can end up with the wrong treatment, and serious side effects. (We're not going to debate doctor's scripts here!).
If you are going to fake an ailment, a bad back's easy enough to fake, but I do hope you get found out. Like the previous respondents said, it's not like you don't get enough holidays, and you get paid more than I do for doing a graduate job, without the responsibility of making decisions in an acute care environment.
Before you ask, I have had three days off sick in eleven years
I reckon you shouldn't try to feign an illness to get time off; I reckon the best idea is to ask for a week of unpaid leave as somebody has already suggested, this way they can get cover (as they would've had to do anyway if you'd skived) but you wont have to worry about coming back really tanned. You should just explain your situation to your boss.
Good luck!!
I dont agree with wasting the doc's time but i dont understand why alot of people are getting so annoyed about somebody wanting to pull a sicky, i thought most people did it every now & then? there are a couple of people where i work that are really quite lazy yet i have to work my ass off all day, when i have time off it pleases me to know that they are having to cover me and actually do some work for a change. Although that said, each time i have pulled a sicky i seem to end up being ill a few days later, suppose thats what you get for lying!!
anyway, fizzydrinks if you do manage to get to florida hope you have a good time
Are you serious? I don't have kids, but if I did I would hope they weren't being (supposedly) educated by someone with such unprofessional standards, who goes on a public message board and asks this question!
Get a grip - ask for special dispensation to take the time off, if not, offer the holiday to a friend or relative?
BTW - my other half is a physio. She gets her fair share of fake-back-painers swinging the lead in her clinic every week. She sees through it before the person has even sat down, and any competent doctor would too. From what you've implied, your family depends on this income from your second job whilst you are not teaching - I'd suggest if you need it, you don't balls it up by taking a free jolly in the sun to the detriment of your employer and colleagues! Alternatively, if the job doesn't mean that much to you and you absolutely have to take this holiday, then leave and get another job with someone who will give you unpaid leave.
I'm self employed and get no paid holiday at all - people like you make me laugh, trying to have your cake and eat it! I suppose you'll be expecting this time off to be paid....jesus wept!
I was not judging you about taking time off work. It was how you proposed to do it. As someone mentioned. How would you explain the tan. I had a similar situation once although I didn't win the holiday, but had the chance to go to New York. I had taken all my holidays and the company I worked for didn't like people having more time off than was necessary. I thought honesty was best and explained the situation and was given the time off and I enjoyed it knowing I could come back and tell everyone about it.
I Hope you get to go to American and I am sure it's probably a once in a lifetime trip. You should perhaps be open with your boss then you can enjoy it and share it all when you return. It would be very difficult not to talk about it as it is a great place.
Sorry if you thought I was judging you. Have a great holiday.
