20 is slae (slade is a dell, minus the D, to give slae which is Scottish for sloe, meaning black)

Yes, it is tift - meaning a pet in the huffy sense (if = condition, inside 2 x t). I assume the original clue had Pet's (the apostrophe).

Many thanks quizmonkey, I wasn't sure if 20A was SLAE or SPAE spade being black in a deck of cards and yes I should have said PET'S. Thanks for ALL your help.
