Peter Garland has given me a lot of money - why?

The above person has placed a lot of money in my account and i dont know why. How can i trace him? the banks are not telling me anything.

Move it to a high interest account and wait for them, to realise the ****** and ask for it back. You'll probably get to keep the interest.

I don't think the bank can take it off you now it is in your bank account. Take it out quick so they can't.

I don't know why Peter Garland has given you so much money. He sounds like a really nice bloke though.

Perhaps it's best if you don't query it, or try to trace him.

I don't think l_h_Kings is right about the bank cannot get it back. It can, because it was obviously a mistake that the recipient realised had happened.

If you have received money in error and you are aware of this it is your legal duty to inform the bank of the mistake. Failure to do this could mean you are prosecuted for fraud. Whatever you do, don't move the money out of the account. The money is not yours so don't spend it.

Ursula62 is correct. If your account has been credited with money you are not entitled to then you have a duty to tell your bank and ask for it to be withdrawn and investigated. There was a case last year I recall where a couple were each jailed for 6 months for spending �25k that had been wrongly credited to their account.

Be very careful with this, this could be a money laudering operation of some kind which will drop you right in it unless you make sure that you have done your best to advise the bank that the money was not intended for you and that you know nothing about it. Suggest that you write to the bank ASAP and inform them names, account No etc.. and that X amount was transfered to you on X date and that to the best of your knowledge this is not your property and you do not accept to receive it and that they should immediately remove it from your account (leaving any interest obviously !)
After that it does not really matter how long it stays in your account, but make sure that you dont spend it.

Otherwise, well, I live in a country which specialises in offshore ask no questions banking, maybe I could talk to someone about a untracable transfer to a numbered account in your name.

I agree that you need to make sure that you put in writing that you do not know the source of the money. Otherwise, you could been seen to be a fraudster yourself - I'm sure that the money isn't worth that.
