Alcohol 'allergy' cure?
I've been told I have Alcohol Flush Reaction, which basically means that I lack an enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) which breaks down alcohol in the liver. Therefore, to all intents and purposes, I'm allergic to it as when I drink even a little, I feel very ill and go very red. Does anyone know if there are any foods/drinks/medicines that can help with the breakdown of alcohol sufficiently enough so that I'm able to hold SOME of it? Or even more, is there anything that gene technology can do for me? Thanks a lot.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.hi, i dont know if anyone is still reading this thread but i know a lot about the condition because i have it and i went to the doctors about it. it is called oriental flushing syndrome and affects approx. 50% of oriental people. symptoms are redness in the face neck and shoulders, faintness and collapsing, nausea and vomiting, shivers, heart palpitations and rashes, all of which i experienced. it is because of a lack of enzyme in the liver and instead we have a different enzyme that converts alcohol into a more toxic chemical rather than converting it to acetic acid. i read that certain heart burn medicines can help with it and also eating carbohydrates (glucose or fructose) approx. an hour before drinking can help, but wont completely cure it, it will just lessen the symptoms. as for the people who are not of any oriental descendance and thier face just goes really red and hot, that is not the oriental flushing syndrome at all, it is something different all together. alcohol inhibits anti-histamines in the body and releases histamines in the body - some alcohol a lot more than others. a reaction to this is for the blood to rush to the face. other symptoms can be having hayfever/allergy like symptoms, such as sneezing and sometimes to get a rash. some people react to some drinks more than others and some drinks are worse for it than others (e.g. some red wines). but it isnt oriental flushing syndrome unless you get the rest of the symptoms too. hope this helps.
I used to be able to drink beer and be fine and over the past few years I started to notice that I would suffer from what I htought was a hang over just from one beer. It kept getting worse. I found myself not being able to drink. I had one doctor mention to me that maybe my body was too acidic and my ph was not balanced. I recently came across a website and found some natural ph balance pills. I was told that with the way my diet is that I should try to keep my ph balanced. You might want to check out the site and maybe try the pills. So far I have been feeling a little better. It could be different for everyone, but check it out. The site is www.healthy-body-ingredients.com

I take an anti allergy tablet containing chlorphenamine maleate or acrivastine and it solves my flushing and stomach pain.
It can make some people extreemly drowsy but it does not have that effect on me.
The box advises that it increases the effects of alcohol but this just isn't the case for me. I can drink significantly more.
I also find that my hangover is significantly reduced.
Obviously I am taking a risk by not following manufacturers instructions but it really has made a difference to my confidence when socialising.

it is really interesting to hear of others with this - don't know any others. I developed a alcohol intolerance probably about 4 years ago ( at 35 years) intialy but this has gradually increased. I used to drink loads as a teen and in my 20's but now I cannot drink any wine or spirits without deveoping flushing over my face down my neck and across my upper chest. This is a lot worse if I am hot- on holiday over the years I have had my worse reactions.I did see a allergy specialist who stated I should take some good anthistamines which do help as I still like to drink, although now in moderation. I can see day when I believe I will have to stop totally, beer is ok for me now at least I can do this without antihistamines.
hi ya never used this thing before, i have something very similar to what Sandra_s is taking about, ever since i could remember when ever i drank i would get red flushes on my face and arms, get sweaty and feel nauseous, i used to for years just drink spirits straight feel awful for 4o Min's then get drunk and forget about it. now at uni i have found that there are other things that i can take to have fun. only there not the things you can take everyday/ week. and the last 3 months of my first term i have been. now feel like I'm feeling the effects. you don't understand how much I'd like to be able to just go out and drink, have the confidence. i don't make a big deal out of it, but it really is a big issue. alcohol is such a social thing that i really cant get involved in. any help would be much appreciated. thank you..........
Hi Sandra,
There are a variety of things you can do to prevent the Alcohol Flush Reaction you mention. I suffer from it myself and i have done a lot of research and purchased many products on the internet in an attempt to solve my problem once and for all.
First of all, beware of the pill remedies offered on the internet at the moment. They are merely overpriced repackaged heart-burn medications commonly sold under the names Pepcid or Zantac. These antacids work if taken before drinking alcohol, however only really do half the job.
I have found that you need to combine a few things such as eating before drinking, eating sugar after drinking, eating a diet high in niacin and omega oils, and also knowing exactly when the take the antacids for maximum results.
here are a few articles that really helped me in my research:

There are definitely was to cure your alcohol allergy, basically you need to find something that will aid your body in metabolizing the alcohol to avoid the nasty by-products of the enzyme deficient process. Try this site on possible cures for <a href="http://www.noredfaceformula.com">alcoho

Hi there,
do not know if anyone still reading on this. But think jbjuly is quite correct. I heard from some people that can try to use hard liquor to apply on the affected rashes area after your drinking. Afterwhich, drink 2 to 3 mouth of hard liquor. Although the rashes won't disappear straight away, but after you wake up, all the rashes will be gone. i myself have not tried it but heard that this method work permanently. So why not give a try?

It's so good to realise that I'm not in my own here! I' ve led quite a student drinking life in my earlier days and now I drink more than I should in the evenings. I 'blotch up' o er my cheeks, neck, shoulders and chest at times. It is difficult to recognise the trigger - always a drink yes, but not regular pattern. In the house it doesn't affect me, it's always when I'm out - and usually a combination of drinks (bear in mind that this is a top mix of beer and wine, nothing else!).
I am worried as my dad said he suffered the same so gave up drink. He now has liver cancer and spread everywhere - I am petrified my symptoms are the same.
Should the blotching warrant my worry??

Alcohol Dehydrogenase is NOT the issue in "Asian Flush"... the deficiency is in Aldehyde Dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is an irritant of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, throat and respiratory tract. Symptoms of exposure to this compound include nausea, vomiting, headache, and large doses can even cause death by respiratory paralysis. It may also cause drowsiness, delirium, hallucinations and loss of intelligence. Exposure may also cause severe damage to the mouth, throat and stomach; accumulation of fluid in the lungs, chronic respiratory disease, kidney and liver damage, throat irritation, dizziness, reddening and swelling of the skin.
In the "normal" liver, Alcohol Dehydrogenase will convert Ethanol into Acetaldehyde, then Aldehyde Dehydrogenase will convert Acetaldehyde into Acetic Acid (completely harmless vinegar). Many East Asians carry a dominant genetic mutation, and the "Asian Flush" liver converts Ethanol into Acetaldehyde... and then is unable to convert the highly toxic Acetaldehyde into Acetic Acid.
In a regular drinker, large quantities of Ethanol have to be ingested in order for the person to experience the effects of Acetaldehyde poisoning since the "normal" human liver is able to convert it to Acetic Acid, the person must drink at a much faster rate than their liver converts.
In a person with the "Asian Flush" mutation, Acetaldehyde poisoning is immediate and prolonged, and triggered by essentially any amount of alcohol. Even 1 shot-glass full of white wine can trigger the entire list posted above of dangerous symptoms.
A person cannot suddenly DEVELOP this genetic mutation, you are BORN with it, or not. Certain drugs such as disulfiram (Antabuse) can impair a "normal" liver's ability to produce Acetaldehyde. Also, other developed illnesses or liver problems could cause a sudden, or later-life onset of symptoms similar to "Asian Flush". However, often the development is an inability to drink AS MUCH, or CERTAIN TYPES of alcoholic beverages... and this IS NOT the same issue as "Asian Flush" reaction. Trust me, I have "Asian Flush" reaction, and even 1 thimble-full of hard liquor causes me immediate Acetaldehyde poisoning, and it is something that currently CANNOT BE TREATED OR CURED. Gene therapy is essentially the only hope. In the meantime, fellow "Asian Flush" sufferers, please DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL. Even moderate drinking in us can cause Cirrhosis of the Liver, Stomach Cancer, Colon Cancer, and a host of other problems. Acetaldehydes are NOT TO BE TAMPERED WITH. I drink cranberry juice with seltzer water at the bar. Be smart, Asian kids, study your Chemistry and save your lives!

I'm really concerned with the fact that most "Asian Flush" posters here are merely concerned with concealing their "flushing" reaction, so that they can drink without embarrassment... Please understand that our genetic mutation is SERIOUS, and even if you are able to mask "Asian Flush" redness through off-label use of antacids or whatever, IT IS NOT BREAKING DOWN THE ACETALDEHYDE. There is no scientifically known way to currently enable an "asian flush" liver to produce the necessary Adlehyde Dehydrogenase enzyme. Drinking IS CAUSING YOU SERIOUS ORGAN DAMAGE if you have this condition.
There is a cure now. It's taken the world long enough to realize that there was a market for it, but there's a natural supplement now: http://www.afformula.com/
Hey fellow flushers,
I want to first state that I am not trying to appear as a pushy company trying to sell you a fake product.
My name is Pat and I suffered from Alcohol Flush just like you. I was fed up with dealing with the embarrassing effects of the condition, so we decided to get to the bottom of it. After spending over a year researching why it happens within the body and what can be done to prevent it, we arrived at our formula, AF Reducer .
Our supplement is taken prior to drinking and significantly reduces flushing caused by alcohol. I take this every time before I drink and it works for me (and my flush is badd).
I encourage you to check us out online at www.afreducer.com . I'm so confident that our product will work for you that you can use this 10% off coupon on your next order! (code "OnlinePromo")
Please message us on the site if you have any further questions!
