Badges, Best Answer's

Can someone please tell me what the badges and best answer's are all about on the profiles. Is it the same as kiddies getting 'gold stars' for school work well done?

But that's the point, it doesn't update and I'd love to know what my missing best answers are. Emailing the Ed is a waste of time !

maybe the authority of a poster would be more obvious if it was shown alongside his/her answer - eg each time Buenchico gave an answer in Technology or Travel the appropriate badge would be shown. This might save the OP having to hunt through Buenchico's profile to see if he knows what he's talking about.
