I know this should be somewhere else so apologies. British Gas have just rung me, they want to come and install smart meters for both my gas and electricity. Has anyone had this done,if so has it made any difference or is it just another ploy to make money. My bills cost more than enough now. They said it will cost me nothing, but I can't say I'm convinced. Dont really trust any of these companies these days.Any advice or comments will be very welcome. Thanks.

No it won't cost you anything, in fact it's the way forward as it will get rid of meter readers. I have a smart meter on my water supply...........

I do my meter readings online, but I'm so suspicious these days that I just think they will be after more money.
craft I wanted a smart meter for my water supply but was told they don't do them. Which utilities company are you with?

giveup, I know the related questions are sometimes a pain but if you scroll down there are quite a few answers about them.
The Electrical Safety Council have expressed concerns that the electrical meter tails could be disturbed during the smart meter installation if the meter is adjacent to the distribution board. This may involve a call out to a registered contractor to rectify the matter and a charge to the consumer accordingly. At the moment the meter installers are denying responsibility for consumers equipment.
I had a smart meter installed for my electricity in my business. The purpose for this I was told was so that meter reading could be taken remotely(ie from outside the building) so therefore a meter reader would not be required. This was done about 12 months ago. Yesterday a meter reader turned up to read
the meter because it is not working correctly. This reader was from British Gas. I stopped using British Gas at the begining of the year and changed to EDF. This was purely from a pricing aspect. Luckily I took the readings on New Years Day and informed both company's. So I suspect I will be calling India shortly to,sort it out.
I'm with Yorkshire Water missprim...........
Thanks craft, I'm with United Utilities so perhaps they might get round to supplying them one day.
