My best friend at college came from Elland (in between Hudderfield and Halifax). His father was also a true Yorshireman but his mother was Glaswegian. Whenever they had Yorkshire pudding in their house, his father would eat it as starter, with gravy. My friend would have it as an accompaniment to the main course and then his mother would have it as a dessert, with custard!

When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, we didn't have much in the way of spare money, so all our "afters" had to be cheap to make. Thus they tended to be apple pies, jam roly-polys, spotted dick, rhubarb crumble, etc.
We didn't have a freezer ( or even a 'fridge in the early days ) so ice cream seldom made an appearance. Custard was poured over almost very pudding, and its still my preferred choice. If I am in a restaurant and there is one of those glass cabinets that rotate, they always seem to be full of various posh gateaux. But I will go with the apple pie option every time, if there is one.
I have just remembered another of my Mum's puddings. She was a great maker of jam tarts, with home-made jam of course. I can never remember having shop-bought jam when I was a kid. In fact, I was never able to save up enough of those paper Gollys on the back of Robinson's Jams, in order to get a metal Golly badge !
But every now and then, she would make marmalade tarts as well as jam ones....shear bliss !
