Who Painted This Picture?

In the far distance there are the rooves of a village and a steeple, to the left, two windmills. In the middle distance a herd of cows grazing.
In the foreground two women sitting on the grass. One, dressed in black, is reading a book. She might be a chaperone. The other is dressed in lighter coloured clothes and is holding a parasol. She's looking out of the picture, to the right, as though she's waiting for someone.
It might be an impressionists work.

Compositionally, it sounds like it should be be a Monet....

With windmills, I'd say probably Dutch - Pieter Bruegel the elder? he was known for his pastoral scenes

NO matter about the wrong vowel. A few minutes glancing through Monets paintings are minutes well spent.
That is the picture, DTcrossword.. Hirondelles. I've had a print for years and never knew the painter.

I always get my Monets and Manets mixed up, even though they have quite distinctive style differences.

Bruegel the Elder or Younger, spikey, though I do love both their paintings. Just to make things worse, there was Pieter and Jan the Elder and Pieter and Jan the Younger......all related through to Pieter the Elder

Unfortunately the painting is not really on public show, it's the property of the "Stiftung Sammlung EG Bührle" in Zurich.

There`s a Manet exhibition at the RA at the moment. It`s only on for about 9 weeks or so. I don`t know whether that painting`s showing but there are 50 works on display. It`ll be a bit of a bun fight for tickets though.

I am a great Monet fan,but went to a Water Lillies exhibition in London once and by the end I was fed up with so many all on the one theme,but went to a haystacks one and loved it.

I think the red tinted haystacks are brilliant. Saw a couple in the Tate years ago.

Haystacks are fab. I`ve got the Effetto del Mattino print version in the bedroom. Saw the originals at the RA years ago.
