3d is Benbow

26a I have Reebok

Benbow. See previous thread for all 26a!!

Would suggest Benbow for 3d.

Reebok is listed in my dictionary as the alternative spelling.

I have put RHEBOK but hopefully either spelling will do.
<DIV>I doubt whether either spelling will do, because the clue specifically asks for the alternative spelling, so I'm going with REEBOK.

Many thanks to all
porilo, I am sure that when 'alt sp' is stated it means that either spelling will be deemed as correct - in this case neither rhebok or reebok can be said to be the normal spelling so either must be considered correct.
Not so flamingo97. As mentioned before, my dictionary specifically states : reebok, alternative spelling to rhebok'. When referring to 'rhebok' it does not mention this as an alternative spelling. Must assume 'reebok' is the only alternative spelling.

Sorry waimarie but it IS so. I do not wish to belabour the point but you are looking at one dictionary which gives one as an alternative of the other. Other dictionaries will give the two spellings the opposite priority. If you look up rhebok in Chambers dictionary it says 'same as reebok' but only gives the definition under reebok 'a S African antelope'. If I were to go by your reasoning I would have to use rhebok as the alternative spelling.

However I am NOT stating one is right and one is wrong - both are alternative spellings and both fit which means that BOTH have to be taken as correct answers by Michael Mepham.

I have found that neither the Oxford online dictionary nor Britannica online give any alternative to rhebok, although as already has been posted, Chambers give it as an alternative to reebok. As Reebok is a proprietary name for a brand of shoe I'm sticking to reebok.

I was wrong about the Oxford online Reference Library. It does give reebok as a variant of rhebok. Sorry!

Morning all. Can I just confirm that either spelling will be accepted for this clue. Michael Mepham kindly replied to my e-mail with:

I think that the SA spelling is reebok (as adopted by the footwear manufacturers) and the English is rhebok. If either fit (but I don't think they do) both will be accepted.

Little odd that Michael doesn't realise they both fit but then if the time of the e-mail (00.50) is correct then I am surprised that he had the decency to reply at that time of the morning and not leave it a while.
