Been discussing this with Mr O. If someone on benefits won a huge sum of money which they had to pay into their bank and then promptly gave the lot away to charity, would they have to declare it and would it affect their benefits?

I think it's check behind your left ear.... and I'm giving a hypothetical answer... someone comes into money.. not for the state to support them if they can do so themselves.. if they're silly enought to fritter it all away, albeit on charity, then they should have the wherewithall to be able to take care of themselves and not rely on the tax payer....

If you jacked in your job the state wouldn't support you. If you had the money to support yourself and gave it away you could hardly expect to be able to go on benefits.
