Was Lenny Peters (of Peters and Lee - 'Welcome Home' etc), who wore those dark glasses, really blind, or was it just part of the act?

I saw these 2 on the recent Channel 4 "Top Ten Duets". he was totally blind from birth but didnt tell too many people. There are many amusing stories about him winding up his partner by pretending to slip off the stage. Lenny died some years ago after a long illness.
