What Does "chanelling" Mean?

as in "I'm chanelling Fred Bloggs". Julian Fellowes used it in one of his recent Country House TV programmes. He said it was an American term but didn't explain it further. It's often used in the Radio Times as well.

I think it means that you use your own body to allow the spirit of the dead person to speak, or receiving messages
