I heard Bud sing this in the early 1960s performing with Chesney Allen at Butlins! This was for a recording of a seaside variety show for tv. Does anyone know any more about this recording? I've not been able to find any reference to it in the web.
there have been 2 "umbrella man" songs, both with different lyrics. That which contains the line "any umbrellas, any umbrellas, to mend today" was written by Larry Stock, Vincent Rose and James Cavanaugh in 1938. Its release co-incided with umbrella-toting Neville Chamberlain's trip to Munich for the phoney peace accord, and the British public quickly associated the 2.
Much strangeness...
Films using the track are listed here and for those films both Flanagan and Allen are listed as uncredited composers of the song. However the song was co-written in 1938/9 by Larry Stock, Vince Rose and James Cavanaugh.
