For burning calories and so for weight loss is it better to swim for longer at a slower speed or to swim faster for a shorter time ?

Exercise can help- I know someone who lost weight through a lot of cycling- but I know that that for me it's ineffective. II run maybe 3 miles but feel hungry when I get back- and the slice of toast I have probably cancels out the calories burned in half an hour's running
