In the full knowledge that it won't be long before someone posts something other than "agree" or "disagree" on the straw poll, I'm nevertheless putting up a thread so we can discuss this results.
I'm surprised to see that six votes in, it's an even split.
I wonder what the difference would have been had I asked how it affected people's feelings towards the person proselytising, but that wasn't what interested me as I suspect that's more obviously straightforward.
I have no idea what your survey will prove though. Any survey question that includes words like 'thinly veiled attempts...' seems like a leading question to me
Not at all. That's merely descriptive of certain posts that are clearly not intended as genuine questions to which the poster wishes people to respond but as a means of preaching ones religious views.
And before anyone mentions it, I'm aware that some people will want to say some atheists have done a similar thing. Feel free to allow that to influence your response to the straw poll.
I don't reckon the people behind the proselytising particularly care about the effect of it Waldo. It's just something they think they need to do.
The poll could come out 100% negatively for them and I don't think it would register any significance other than to perhaps confirm that the devil is at work and their efforts to spread the word need to be doubled.
I couldn't answer your question simply because that would require me to go into levels of respect which would range from great respect to hatred.
I have little respect for religion in general but it depends what you mean by 'religion' and how it is actually practiced.
I have great respect and liking for the Salvation Army and a thorough dislike for the Roman Catholic church, both of which are Christian , but practice their belief in different ways.
The same applies to Judeism and Islam which is also practiced in different ways. All of these are based on the Old Testament. and New Testament
Very few AB questions in News and RS are entirely motiveless.
Modeller, not that I have any respect for their religious belief, but I admire the work of the Salvation Army too. However, I think Waldo is talking about the religions that are regularly touted on AB – and the Sally Ann isn’t one of them.
I uphold the right of everyone to display their ignorance. No snake should be denied its inherent right to rattle. What I object to is those who seek to repress the equally essential and important right of condescension, to point out that at the other end of that rattle lies a potentially lethal venomous bite.
