I only bank with one of these financial institutions and they had a warning on the front of their online banking site (the genuine one) advising people not to reply.
NO bank/building society will EVER ask for your details by email or by phone. Never give them to anyone, it will ALWAYS be a scam of some sort!
There is a whole stream of these e-mails doing the rounds. Banks and Building Societies do not contact their customers by e-mail in this manner asking for personal details to be revealed.
Don't ever reply to these mails. Just delete them and notify your bank. They know such mails are being sent but if for any reason your computer's security might be compromised (lack of firewall, virus checker, etc), especially if you use internet banking, it's better to warn your bank that you've had such a message.
