There are loads of free PDF-conversion programs which work with ANY other program that has a 'print' function (such as Notepad, Word, other word processors, image viewers and DTP programs). They do that by tricking your computer into thinking that there's a new printer connected to it, while the data is actually sent to a PDF file.

i.e. you open your document as usual, in whatever program you choose (such as Word). Then you go to File > Print (or press Ctrl & P together). You change the printer to the 'virtual' one and, hey presto, you've saved the file as a PDF.

Here's the one I use:

.RTF means "rich text format" and these files can be read by using WordPad. Word Pad is a basic document reader and should be on any computer using Windows.
Go to START/ Programs/ Accessories/ click on WordPad.
Open Office will also read .rtf files.
