Or the "home-made" christmas gifts from Granny's knitting, especially when she knitted my swimming trunks, as a 9 year old..... & yes, I still suffer from flashbacks :(
Two items of second hand clothing I wore as a child. The first a sports coat that was so big it was hanging off me. I threw it away after a couple of days. The second was a pair of pinstripe trousers. There must have been a midget town clerk somewhere who'd given his old clothes away. They ended up in the market and I had no option other than to wear them. I was about 13, I think, and they weren't that bad a fit.
Most of my childhood I wore my sisters hand-me-downs and the trouble was mum and dad used to dress us all the same, so me being the youngest of three girls had the same blooming dress for years and years and years! We did all have our own best summer frock and best winter dress. I had grey coats, pork pie hats and brown tweed coats and brown berrys, I was glad when mum left dad so I got new clothes of my own! Knickers were always new!
I only had brothers...so never got 'handed' more than wellies, which don't count.
Lots of older girl cousins handed down their Chelsea Girl and Biba, which chuffed me no end.
And in 1973 an auntie handed down a plum velvet 1950s skirt suit...I was the knees of the bees.
I used to get my cousin's clothes and some from the daughter of my mum's friend. I liked it! I got to choose what I wanted obviously and was never forced to wear them!
I remember one pair of trousers had really wide legs and were a really dark blue. I had to chuck them because they got stuck in my bike chain. I was gutted!! Lol!
