router problem
6 Answers
hi,
can anyone help please?
my old laptop had xp on it and used a netgear router to go wireless.
my new laptop has vista on it and cannot connect to the old router unless using the yellow ethernet cable.
now, bear with me because i might have got this all wrong, but someone told me the problem is because -
the old router is a 'g' network (?) which was compatiable with my old lappy,
and the new lappy is an 'n' network (?) which it is, i checked the box.
so, if this is the case, what do i have to do please so i can go wireless again?
does it mean buying a new router??
thank you :o/

looby - ignore me earlier answer - bit of a blond moment
The problem isn't necessarily the wifi card
2 things to check - access the router - just make sure it can't use n (this will be in the router setup - refer to handbook) - and that the wireless is switched on
(I can't decide - can you/have you tried another lappy?
Once certain it's not the router
On lappy - control panel (use classic view)
system | hardware | device manager
look down the list for network adapters ... click on the +
and you'll see each card ... right click on your wireless card | properties - see (http://i26.tinypic.com/2rei5wn.jpg)
If it's just set for n - changeto n/g/b, n/g or auto
(you'll have to play to see which works)
also remember you've done it ... because if you do get an N - you might as well use the better signal
